What is it?
An incredible resource tucked away in the Kelvinhall, the MIA functions as a curated archive for the public to dip into this National collection. It also has longer term study areas to dig deeper, viewing rooms capable of watching historic media and an overview of the Library’s main catalogue of printed and digital matter in Edinburgh.

Look and Feel
Trying to reflect a national identity, a neutral oak and textured grey base are embedded with subdued natural blues and greens. Brighter furniture in the foreground is aimed at drawing in first-time visitors to interact with curated digital content.
Marrying functions
The design of the space tries to subtly link all the functions it supports. Alongside the digital interfaces, familiar and comfortable seating hopes to encourage multigenerational use. Partially disguised by object display, a mix of height-adjustable desks and more personal oak alcoves create options for study styles. Viewing rooms are acoustically treated and walls lost in a black finish.
Bespoke added value
The interior of the archive was peppered with references to the broader collection, hoping to create curiosity and intrigue. Interior fixtures like traditional Anglepoise lamps tried to suggest the heritage of the library and it’s analogue past.
