national galleries of scotland

Engaging hundreds of staff under gallery conditions during a pandemic, with a high-profile new brand is tricky. Add the high standards, a ticking clock and, well, we were certainly challenged.

What Did We do?

Essential was creating a focussed team with National Galleries of Scotland staff to get this event over the line. We had prior form with the organisation, but displaying internally colleagues was a new proposition. We called on our experience of working inside National institutions, our ability to be flexible in our creative solutions and our track record of transforming brands within physical environments. Several sessions to dissect the new brand which was still being developed by DNCO, were also key.

A Light Touch

The Portrait was our venue and to give character, we used faces as much as we could; we drew them, staff drew them, we had a bit of fun. An audio tour helped take groups of 6 through the first room, taking on big policy ideas whilst connecting to collections. We brought in Nich Smith and Stoane Lighting to showcase cleaner, brighter lights using timers and motion sensors. The effects were truly stunning - revealing an incredible depth of colour within featured works from the collection (see John Sakeouse painting below).

Effectiveness

Calm music played in the second, more compact space - an opportunity to take a seat, draw and share how you relax, spotlighting staff as humans rather than workers. At the end of every room was an opportunity to log (via smartify app) if staff were getting the messages or not. We used the talents of Chris Third to allow tracked digital engagement before, during and after the event which was easily accessible for the client to calculate the effectiveness of the event.

Managing Up & Down

The last space discussed Environmental policy and National Galleries of Scotland’s future with an opportunity to interact in a variety of analogue and digital ways. The event finished with directorate led discussions, self-portraits and a takeaways to promote well being.

Stuco managed diverse sub contractors and client alike, solidly maintaining immovable dates and costs.

You can read our client’s review below.

STUCO are exactly who you want to work with.

We gave them a challenging brief with a lot of components changing, along with a short timeline. They rose to the challenge with commitment, creativity and unstinting positivity. Stuart, Kim and their team became an extension of our own - we really valued their ability and willingness to work flexibly and together with us to overcome challenges as they arose.

The outcome looked great, delivered our aims brilliantly and got great feedback. What more could you ask?”
