the harbourmaster’s building

The small but perfectly formed Harbour Master’s building on Stranraer’s water front has seen the ferries come and go, but what is on the horizon for the town’s future?

What Did We do?

Stuco transformed the old Master’s office into a comfortable, modern haven of interpretation. Alongside the Pooley weigh-bridge scales as the centre piece, marine ephemera found with the help of the community create dressing with provenance. Stranraer and District Local History Trust - combined with this HES Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme funded project - helped create interviews detailing a wide range of local perspectives.

Look and Feel

With a finite budget, we had to be pragmatic about how we approached the design. Clean and airy, the space couldn’t support most objects due to light levels but helps give a contemporary feel - with colours taken from weather beaten maritime equipment. In line with Stranraer’s general regeneration, we wanted the space to feel relevant to the future of the port as much as the past.

Project Management

We formed a great alliance with the Project manager for D&G council, Pam Taylor, and created a positive outlook for pushing through any obstacles - putting in place strategies to make sure we achieved what we were after with diplomacy and exactness.
